Introduction: My grandfather was an eccentric man. Every day, he would light incense for himself, stand before his own memorial tablet, and eat candles. The villagers were all terrified of my grandfather. I, too, was afraid of him. It wasn’t until later that I realized—they weren’t afraid of my grandfather. They were afraid of me. Even my grandfather feared me.
